it's a u.s. union civil war buckle for sure. awesome find!!

Thats great to hear. I investigated a little and it may be a cartridge box plate? The strange part is some rust from the hook looks like it came through the front of the plate.

You are correct - though not a civil war buckle, it is a cartridge box plate.

Yep..box plate for sure. Although not a buckle a very good CW recovery. Congratulations. It will display nicely.

Very nice find. The wire in the back can rust through the brass in some soils. That can occur with breastplates too. HH, Quindy.
