Broken arms ribs and probably stitches at the least. If it grabs a big rock your in trouble fast.

if you've ever set fence posts you know what happens when you hit a rock in otherwise softer loose material?

the Rock is stronger than the auger..the auger is stronger than you..see OK Basspros comment above....

I think that I would check the laws in your "public" area first. Being that it's in California, I doubt if it would be legal without a permit. From what I've seen in this thread, you're better off with a backhoe. The guy in the video sure is taking a lot of tools with him to run that augre... I've taken a post hole digger with me before and it works just fine.
He only took the dirt out of the top half of his hole... Even though he drilled down 4', it was too narrow to get the post hole digger even close to the bottom. Stick with a 6' digging bar because it might be legal in a public area, but checking the rules comes first.
