This was a challenging, but fun yard. A ton of unevenly distributed mineralization meant that I had to adjust the sensitivity every few paces, but it paid off time and time again. I found a decent crotal bell and conestoga bell complete with the clapper. Those bells always looks so majestic coming out of the ground and I've been surprised by how many complete ones I've found this past year.

I found this beautiful 1888 V nickel within 2" of the surface and then not even a foot away my first shield nickel!

It looked great out of the ground, but it's been deteriorating despite preservation attempts. It was under a pine tree so the acid really did a number on it. I did get the date off it though; it was an 1868, so that's at least something.

The rest of the day was a good assortment of relics including 10 wheat pennies (1936, 1938, 1941, 2x 1942, 1948, 1952, 1955, 2x 1957) and one 1862 indian head cent. The iron wheel is sort of strange, but looks like it was off a toy wagon or something similar. There's also the tiny bridle rosette and a brass thimble in good shape. Not bad for a few hours!

That's the type of OLD finds that get me salivating!:tongue1: Congratulations on your first Shield Nickel with a date. Still searching after nine years for my first Shield.:sad11: Sweet old V Nickel and Fatty Indian makes for a great coin shooting day. Add those cool relics and this was a fantastic hunt!:hello2: I'd be happy as all get out if it took a week to find all this cool stuff. A few hours make you ON FIRE!:blob8:

I found an iron ring exactly like that one at an old house demolition last week! I wasn't sure what it was, so I left it there.

Nice little hunt there--little bit of everything. I imagine the juices were flowing.

a buffet of goodly artifactness -- scrub that dirt like a rogue server :headbang:

Absolutely awesome finds! Just nabbed a shield nickel over the weekend myself- great to see that big 5! Congrats on a great hunt!

Great hunt! I wonder what else you will find? The few shield nickels I have found were barely recognizable. That one looks great!!!! Love that bell, what a beauty!!!

Nice finds. Your V nickel is in way better shape than mine, and 23 years older on top of it.
Congrats!

you had me with the bells and then I see the other sweet finds. from what I could see, you were up to the challenge. a very worthwhile hunt.

Congrats!

Thank you! I was actually very surprised at the condition; all my other nickels (buffalo and V) have been in very bad shape and this was in the exact soil as the shield nickel, but somehow escaped almost unscathed. Weird how that goes sometimes.

Wow awesome finds

Congratualtions on the relics and old coins! :occasion14:

Now you can ring in the New Year in style.

What a hunt you had! Love those nickels!
