the lip is not applied, it is tooled. an applied lip is when a separate blob of glass was put on the top of the bottle and shaped into the lip. on a true applied lip bottle, there will be no circular tooling marks on the neck of the bottle, and there may be some extra glass dripping out from under the lip, or the botton edge of the lip could be uneven. also, the mold seam will run directly to the lip and then just stop, right where the applied glass covered it up. tooled lip bottles were blown in the mold with the lip included, then taken out and the lip was tooled to perfection. or close to perfection

the mold seam will fade out somewhere on the neck or, rarely, on the lip of these bottles.
