VDI # for rings?

I would not rely on a VDI for any ring. I have had gold rings sing out at 45, my lowest number and as high as 90 for a huge gold ring. VDI's are only so accurate. The one I thought was aluminum at 45 the other a silver quarter.

Should i be digging all my good tones, regardless of vdi #?

I dig repeatable signals, that ring clearly from all directions... still might be a pull tab, but that goes with the territory. In some places you start to recognize specific trash signals... I've learned that corroded cans under six inches of packed cement hard crushed clam shells are indistinguishable from quarters... 4 times out of about 20, they were quarters. The one clue I started to pick up on was that coins gave me a consistent depth reading, while the cans could read 2" one sweep, 10" the next.

I found the trick to ID the crushed can at 6-8" is to raise the coil --if you still get the sig. at 4-5" off the ground its a can/// Perry
