I'm sure this is an issue across all areas where mound making societies lived. My grandfather use to tell me of numerous mounds along the Ouachita River and D'arbonne bayou that were destroyed when he was a boy and young man. One, that I believe may have been a midden, was slowly washed away. Over the years, he remembered seeing numerous entire bowls and containers go into the water. Some even thrown. They knew no better. The ridge running down to the location is now a moon scape. Because of the lack of trust in government (deserved), so many sites are lost.

WHY THE PUBLIC MAY NEVER SEE 'WATSON BRAKE'

Since it's an artifact forum, I shared a photo of my favorite bird points. The artistry it took to produce those little jewels is amazing. Most of my small collection come from areas not far from ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1471233567.420098.webpWatson brake.

Those are beautiful and thank you for sharing the story. A similar situation happened here when the college was first built, thinking the 80's maybe earlier. When they were bulldozing it they dug up tons of whole pots and to the onlookers shock turned the dirt over breaking and burying them. I didn't live here then but knowing what happened makes me sick.

Beautiful points! Glad you could save them.
