Very old belt buckle?

Found this in the same area I found a 1802 large cent. It looks like a buckle and is about the size but I'm still unsure...

Looks like a Colonial shoe buckle to me.

That style of chape and double tongue was used mainly from 1720 to 1770. Could be a little later than that era, though. The colonial shoe buckle I found (see my avatar) has a similar chape, but a slightly different shape to it. Mine has the same double tongue and is an Artois style shoe buckle from the 1770's or 1780's.

You're welcome. It's a great find and it really nice shape. Just finding part of a colonial shoe buckle is cause for celebration. But finding a complete buckle is rare.

And whatever you do, don't try to straighten out the tongue part! It will probably break if you attempt it. It's perfect the way it is now.
