Hello T-Netters.....
Today I took a friend to go metal detecting at an old park in the center of a historic town, a stone's throw away from a gristmill that George Washington visited some time in the seventeen nineties. I was really hoping to find something good, because my friend was thinking of buying his own metal detector, but wanted to test the water a bit first. We dug up about five dollars in clad, and then switched our area of focus to a swampy area of wet soil, and after digging two more lincoln pennies, out popped the beauty seen below! My friend went wild - I did too actually! It's really quite amazing, one of my best finds ever for sure. I don't know much about cameos, but I would assume it to be 1880ish? Any information on it at all is appreciated. It's not marked with a manufacturer or gold karat, but I'm pretty sure it's gold and not plate or fill. It was in the hole next to a rusty nail which may have cause some of the coppery looking areas, but I don't know. I'm going to have it tested tomorrow. Even if it isn't gold the stone alone is beautiful, and it's an amazing part of the history of my town! The site we found it at is one of those "hunted out" sites that EVERYONE detects, so I was expecting the worst, but got the best! Or at least pretty darn close!
Thanks for looking, and happy hunting!

Beautiful cameo. Congrats on the nice find. HH Dan

I deal in antique jewelry, and YES this is an amazing find. You are right about the age,.....and it is maybe a tad older than that. I would put it closer to 1870.
It does look like good to me also. It is a brooch missing it's pin. This would be a great piece to have restored with a new pin. It must be done correctly, so not just any jeweler can do this, or they will solder on a pin that is modern. I would love to see a photo of it after it is cleaned!!
I would love to know the story of how it was lost. My guess is that somehow the pin came off, and the beautiful brooch fell in the dust, never to be found again,.....till now. Congrats on this VERY nice find!!

P.S. You CAN soak this in some warm soapy water for awhile, and then take a soft toothbrush to it to clean it. This lady deserves a bath!!

congrats, that is one gorgeous cameo!

Lovely Treasure you have found. Unusual Frame > not your common oval style. I might be mistaken but I think that your cameo is Queen Victoria ??? She adored cameos and some were carved in her image. Your find is very detailed and if gold framing should fetch over $750.00 when pin is fixed. It could well sell for this as is !!

Great find.
See if your jeweler can put one on (Pin). Very worth restoring. If they have a problem with getting a pin for it let me know, I would see what I have in my collection of such pins.

An ultrasonic clean may be able to be used to clean it also. Ask your jeweler.

I was going to suggest queen Victoria also. First thought that came to mind. Monty
