Turn of the century woman's coin purse/compact. Designed for Nickles and Dimes.
Might be Sterling or white metal alloy.

Awesome collection of finds. The coin purse is really interesting and does look like maybe silver. Is that a stamp right below the coin slots?

very cool finds.

There is a stamp of a 'J' between the nickel and dime slots but that rectangle at the bottom is a hole for the latch that would have been on the other half of the purse.

Bet your heart skipped a beat when you opened that! :icon_thumright:
What year was the penny?

Cool stuff UnderMiner. What kind of site were you on?

It is on the location of an old incinerator and municipal dump that was started in the 1880's and abandoned in the 1950's. The garbage and light ferrous artifacts of the site have mostly disintegrated leaving behind only brass, copper, silver, gold, glass, plastic, stainless steel, and other corrosion-resistant artifacts. I have found glass ampules of liquid mercury, vintage hypodermic needles, lead paint in rusted-out cans, toxic waste of every kind. The site is an environmental nightmare, but besides the toxic waste there is also alot of nice things too - silver artifacts and coins, gold, lots of copper and brass, interesting relics from 100+ years ago, etc. . A shower is needed immediately upon returning home from the site. That's NYC treasure hunting for ya.

You know exactly where this site is. I caught the outgoing tide this afternoon but also all the traffic on the Belt trying to get home afterwards - so it was a give and take. Wasn't a long hunt, only an hour and a half or so before the sun set and had to call it quits. Lots of artifacts were washed out recently as a result of the super moon tides. If you go within the next few days you will be in for a treat as there is alot to be found. There is also a large sailboat that broke loose from its moorings recently and is now beached high up on the sand. Looters already stripped most of it but the hull is still intact. If you want to go together one day I'm usually free on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

These are screenshots of a video I took of the wrecked sailboat that's there right now, very cool:

Nice finds ! I too am interested in what the date is on the "penny" found in the change purse .

After chipping away the corrosion I can confidently report it's a 1912.
Quite a rare penny, given its condition however I think it has a value between zero and 1 cent. :laughing7:
Salt water is mean to pennies.

Have you been able to determine whether or not the coin case is silver yet ?

Was hoping this 8mm film was some kind of lost Zapruder Film or something but it's just a black and white cartoon of a squirrel. Silent movie, no audio strip, and sections of the film have dialog written on black background with the character's dialog written, must be really old!

That film might have some value - I would find someone who has expertise in early film , see what you may have there !
