My local thrift store has a large accumulation of vinyl, I know most thrift stores do, but I also know some of the records are hot right now.

What should I be on the look out for?

I have heard Van morrison, Elvis Christmas album, and some jazz and funk groups are hot, but what else?

I am not a vinyl guy other than buying and flipping at a flea market. All of my stuff is common stuff, heavy on vintage country.

One thing you might do is spend a little time sorting through their stacks, and making a list of 10 or more albums that you might think are good. Go home and look them up, and do a search of the completed sales, highest price first.

I've done this, and it has helped me understand that even common albums in super clean shape can be worth a small fortune.

Condition is everything in vinyl. One scratch takes it from collectible to garbage!Mint covers are a must for top dollar.

get a book and be on the look out,,, not all of the kings stuff is worth big bucks

Thanks guys. I know Elvis stuff is not always valuable. In fact the only vinyl I ever sold was Elvis, still in shrink wrap and got like 10 bucks per album. I then found out that he had lower print numbers on some albums, one of them was one of his Christmas Albums.

Thrift stores are a gamble. So many collectors who know WHAT to look for are at the thrift stores very often. You just have get lucky and be there when they bring out a new unsearched stack. Search you tube on great vinyl finds or thrift store vinyl and get some knowledge of what can bring a few $$.

1. There have been a LOT of threads here lately dealing with this issue. Do a quick search. LOT of info already out there.
2. A "book' on record values is going to be virtually useless in pricing your records. It might help tell you what records "used to" have value and they might still have value.
3. 1 scratch most certainly does not make a record "garbage". Check out goldmine grading standards for more details on condition and grading.
4. Asking which valuable records to look for at a thrift store is like asking for "hot stock tips". This is a great forum for obtaining the knowledge you desire but please consider the way you do so.

Correct and also consider Album Art
allot of times it's the Controversy, or just art itself on the cover

I donated my collection to my son and we filled a pickup bed and had to put two boxes in the cab. While there are some pretty rare albums in there like "introducing the Beatles on the VeeJay label, stereo" I wouldn't consider any of them as valuable due to condition. These were purchased to be played and as such had typical wear and tear.Great to listen to,not so great as collectibles.Walk into most any junk store anywhere in the country and they'll have albums, mostly 60's&70's,usually in pretty good shape for around $2.00 each.A lot of artists released albums in England that we're never released in the US which we might consider rare but are probably pretty common there.Again,it comes down to putting the right product with the right buyer.Remember,a lot of albums were re-released(and counterfeited)so know your dates and issue numbers.

Thanks for the help guys. I have a few books I am looking to get here soon, Vinyl must go on the list.

@Jeff, Thanks for the excellent info. I have always heard of the butcher Beatles album, have never seen one in person.
