Years ago when searching similar items you wanted to sell you could see how many clicks that item got. You got a little gauge on how popular and the go to category. Now it seems under 50% of the listings have visitor counters. I guess back then it was automatically included in the listing.

Yeah they do not have to now, its optional, I think ebay pulse is gone too..(used to show hot items)

Up until a few years ago, to have a counter on your ad, you had to apply it from another site. I used vendio to customize mine and add them to my posts. But eBay finally added this feature as an option when you create your ad. It SHOULD be a default option, like you said, so you can see how many hits an item is getting. If you view an ad now, you CAN see if anyone has it bookmarked as watching. And many folks put a counter on their items. I always do.
