Hi All,

Just received my new Tejon yesterday. Honestly, WOW. I think this may be too much for a pseudo-beginner. Took about 30 minutes to get an acceptable air test and spent another 30 minutes trying to ground balance; still haven't accomplished that.

At any rate, I am slowly working through those issues; just some learning and experience are required.

However, the volume is painfully loud. The manual mentions having headphones with volume control but the headphones I have, have no control. There is no way to control it from the detector, is there?

Seriously, one time, after moving the detector and getting a blast of 'WWWEEEEEEEE' through the headphones, my ears were ringing.

Since the Tejon is extremely deep it gives a higher volume to hear the faint whispers. You are just going to have to buy the better head phones. I suggest the premium phones by Detector Pro. http://www.detectorpro.com/headphones.htm
I really like the Black Widows because they really block out the external sounds and the limiter so sounds don't come through to loud. You can turn the limiter on/off.

As for Ground Balance you turn it on to ALL METAL an just raise and lower the coil level with the ground. Sound goes up, turn the GB knob one way or the other to get as even a sound as you can and thats it. Once you do it you'll wonder what the fuss was about.

On the control box in the middle you can adjust the tone of the response from low to high or even set it in VCO which is what i like.

You'll need the headphones with adjustable volume. I have the cheapo Garretts but they work for me...I use them on an ACE 250 and a Vaquero. They were $25. I wish I would've saved the bucks and bought better ones...I didn't know I'd like this hobby so much but I'll use them until they wear out and I'm already saving up for some top-of-the-line ones. I've learned that it's always hard to justify the cost of high end equipment but after you have it you're sure glad how easy they make your life! I used to use cheapo air mattress for camping. Always had to bring a couple (brand new and still in the box) extras so when you got a flat (at 2 am of course) you had another one to use...then I got one from REI that was over $100 that self inflated. It's been wonderful...problems solved! Each time I use it I no longer worry about what it cost 3 years ago...I just enjoy it.

A volume control on the headphones is needed. You could try to wear the headphones off your ears. Just put them on the back side of your head or something. I actually only use one ear with my headphones the other ear cuff I wear off my ear to the back side of my head. I like to hear what's around me.

You could also just use the speaker on the unit itself. Just put some duct tape over the speaker slots to deaden the sound. I would use this for a temporary thing though. You really do want to hear what the machine is telling you and to do that you really need headphones.

When you ground balance make sure there is no metal in the ground where you are trying to balance. Keep at it. Once you get the hang of it, it will be a breeze. Just make sure the ground is clear where you are trying to balance.

Radio Shack has a decent pair of headphones for $19 with the quarter inch connector to fit the Tejon. They have a volume control in each ear that goes from silent to loud as hell. Not a big investment to go along with a $560 detector. I really appreciate the high volume on the Tejon. Most detectors don't have enough volume.
