Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

i dont get it. what would be the point of this?

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

One of the guys there told me the yard is attempting to become ISO 9001 or 9004 certified. They've already made it mandatory that regulars must supply and wear their own hardhat while in the yard.

I'm not sure the exact reasons.

When I went to the scrap yard yesterday I noticed a new memo effective Aug 1 2007. Basically they are no longer allowing walk ins anymore, if you are not in a vehicle you won't be allowed in.

This oughta cheese off all the regulars I see out and about who don't have cars and bring stuff in with grocery shopping buggies.

Sounds like a liability issue to me, don't want a walk-in squashed by a truck! It also sounds like a money making opportunity for you! Find a lot nearby, and set up with you truck and a scale. Buy the scrap from the former walkins for 50-75% of the value "depending on how nice you are", then drive in and sell it at a profit!

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

looks to me like they dont want to buy "the walk-ins" a new car and house
because they dont know how to read or speak english or are stupid

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

you guys would not believe the walk in I saw at my scrap yard the last time I went there. I was hot as heck out that day and the dude only had shorts on! no shoes, sandels, anything on his feet. walking around a scrap yard! He had a shopping cart full of junk not even 5 bucks worth.

most of the the walk ins may be trouble makers or like he said above .... stupid, hagglin' fer money, & like ole iron feet above liability

oh well

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

One thing that is going on is that a lot of scrap yards are now requiring a valid ID, that is, a driver's license, to be able to sell scrap metal to them. They also record the seller's car tag number also. This is to discourage people from selling stolen scrap metal at the yard and to track all sales for the purpose tracking down stolen metal (mostly copper). A lot of this is being pushed thru from city governments to be able to do something about copper wiring being stolen everywhere. In most places its reached an epidemic stage. The number of police reports being filed on stolen metal in most cities is now a daily occurence. But the problem is that walkins are a signicant source of scrap metal for some yards. At one time in Knoxville, Tennessee homeless people bringing in aluminum cans in shopping carts accounted for more than half of all aluminum can sales at a particular scrap yard. Maybe they should start putting license tags on those carts?!?! :D :D :D That way if they are stolen they can trace them too!!! :D :D :D Regards, Chris Hyder

The other thing too is that in Canada, periodically the Canada Revenue Agency will audit the books of a scrap yard, and cross check it against undeclared income. The place I deal with, you sign a computer printout that has your full name and address on it.

If the feds see you've been making all this money and not declaring it, you'll be paid a visit by the tax auditor as well.

I'm finding most of the places I deal with are now beginning to pay you by cheque instead of cash.

As far as the comments go about the walk -ins, it's only common sense, you don't go to a scrap yard in sandals, yet people do it and they wonder why they get kicked out.

When I've been out doing scrap metal runs( haven't done it lately) I've been giving dirty stares because I have a 3/4 ton Dodge cargo van, and I'm driving beside somebody a bicycle for pete's sakes who's trying to keep their bike stable because they have so much crap. I almost shake my head in disbelief.... :D

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

Out here they put your name on file, just remind em who you are.Under $100 cash over a check.

Does the rest of the Country have those kiosks for redemption value recyclables?

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

Yeah, scrap yards, those great arbiters of high-end culture and good taste. I had to laugh when I read this news. Maybe for my next load I'll really spif up the truck -- get a $50 wash and wax job -- spring for a $75 haircut, and don a three-piece suit (with aluminum can cufflinks of course) just so I won't insult the cultured grandeur of the place.

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

Most of the scrapyards around Chattanooga in my area pay cash now. Commercials Metals pays cash up to $750 then a check is required. The reason is savings in less paperwork. The ones that pay by check for all amounts I'm assuming they don't trust their on staff. Some scrapyards do running tabs on your loads you bring in so keep this in mind. There is an advantage to this. It saves you a lot of time by not having to go to the pay window for each load you bring in and sometimes you get another penny on the pound for being a constant customer to the scrapyard. The disadvantage is that you have to wait for your money for a little while to get paid in lump sum. If you are like me I can't wait most of the time.

The biggest problem I have with walkins is that they often jump line. I can't remember how many times I was fourth pickup truck back and 5 people walked in past me and everyone else to get up close to the scales. Makes the scalemaster mad too because he's got trucks backed up with real money and weight on them and has to deal with one little bag of scrap at a time from these line jumpers. Oh, yeah. The walkins often take more time to get weighed and paid because they are ones who usually insist on talking a lot with everyone there and complaining about not getting a good price for their scrap!!! >:( >:( >:( I'm just ranting a little bit here. Everyone has the right to sell scrap regardless of how much they have. They just need to be considerate of everyone else. Regards, Chris Hyder.

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

Oh man! I'm sellin those cans to buy me some shoes! How am I gonna do that now???

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

I live in a rural area, where the scrap yards are located basically out in the boonies. I've never seen any walk-in traffic (they'd have to walk a helluva long way). Maybe some guy on a bike but that's about it. They don't get the big traffic that the city yards do. No long lines or anything like that. I guess we're spoiled here. I still find it amusing that scrap yards would engage in this type of "natural selection." Would a note from your mother help?

fiatboy, I'm afraid your situation has alreadly been chronicled in the classic Joseph Heller novel, Catch-22.

A fantastic book, btw! Most people on TN don't know that the only thing I love more than treasure hunting is great literature. Your comment just made my day! :)

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

My former girlfriend, "Red," didn't like Catch-22. I told her to apply it to everyday life, then she got the message. "Catches" -- convoluted no-win situations -- abound in our civilization.

I see my scrap yard is now paying an extra nickel per pound if your cans are mashed. Unmashed - 65 cents; mashed - 70 cents. I've always crushed my cans for storage reasons, plus I just like crushing cans. Anybody else out there getting more for mashed cans?

Don't know, cause I haven't cashed mine in yet, but I do enjoy smashing and mashing and bashing and flattening them as much as possible! haha.

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

Crushing those big 32-ounce beer cans is always a treat. Much tougher are the new aluminum bottles from Anheuser Busch.

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

I use two scrap yards. One in urban, The other is rural. I prefer the rural one because of all the homeless people at the urban one. They slow the whole system down. Also the city one records your drivers licence.

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

I like the little half size 8 oz cans.

Re: Walk In's No Longer Allowed

Yes, rural is better. I've never been "carded" or anything like that. One of the recycling employees lives near me, and I usually just give him a call when I have a load ready. He shows up right before work in his huge truck and we just load it up together. That's what I mean by being spoiled -- you just can't beat that kind of small-town service. Plus, their prices are more than competitive for the area.
