War Nickels and Manganese

To retrieve the silver from war nickels, they're dissolved rather than melted, because the manganese in them is very dangerous at high temperatures. I'd like to know more about this process and why melting war nickels is considered to be so dangerous. Could anyone elaborate on this?

why would youwant to melt them? you can sell them for more than scrap.

I don't want to melt. I'm just curious from a metallurgical perspective.

if you get it hot enough the mang. will boil. when it boils it creates a dangerous gas.
