I went out today to an impressive old homestead well back into the woods that I have only briefly checked in the past. It is a big area and the hunting is difficult as most of the fields have grown up with softwoods which makes digging difficult due to all the roots. After a plain flat button or two and far too much spring steel, I came across a nice 60th Regiment of Foot Button from the War of 1812. This makes sense as the 7th Battalion arrived in Halifax in April 1814 and saw action in Penobscot, Maine where they captured and held Fort Castine. After the war, the battalion remained in Halifax until they were disbanded in 1817. My sons sharp eye can read Hemmings Row, London on the back. There is more lettering on the back but we can't quite read it yet. It looks better in hand than in the photos.
On my return walk along an old road which I have walked many times I found a nice 1883 5 cent piece, with is a fairly scarce year.
Although the pickings were thin, I am very pleased with my fathers Day hunt and the dog enjoyed herself.
