There are some old structures built of field stone located on the slope of a hill directly behind my home, so i decided to bushwack my way up and metal detect the area. I was moving up the slope of my hill and looked down and saw this crudely made celt and the associated shells nearby. I have been an artifact hunter for almost 20 years and for the life of me I can't understand what the artifacts were doing in this particular spot. There is at least a 12 degree slope and about 1/3 of the way up a 400 foot hill. the only thing I can think of is an eroded burial or a temporary campsite. I estimate the celt to be 1500 or more years old. The shells are two different species, one I think is what is called an "Unio" shell and the other is unknown. The are probably brought from the Ohio River which is 2,000 feet down the road. The prehistoric Indians in my area ate the heck out of these clams. Well i put my detector down and investigated the area with no avail. No luck detecting either, just way too much iron in the ground.

Nice find, congrats.

Molly.

LL88, nothing wrong with that. Did Jon tell you about the foundation that I took him to in Ludlow? There was some dirt pushed around and I told him I wanted to show him and maybe look for some marbles. We found about six points in a ten square foot area. We then walked back towards the car and I found a buffalo nickel on my way out. You just never know man. I told Jon I have some pretty killer MDing permissions lined up (for you guys mostly.....I just cannot find the patience). Get in touch with him and we will get out.
