There are some old structures built of field stone located on the slope of a hill directly behind my home, so i decided to bushwack my way up and metal detect the area. I was moving up the slope of my hill and looked down and saw this crudely made celt and the associated shells nearby. I have been an artifact hunter for almost 20 years and for the life of me I can't understand what the artifacts were doing in this particular spot. There is at least a 12 degree slope and about 1/3 of the way up a 400 foot hill. the only thing I can think of is an eroded burial or a temporary campsite. I estimate the celt to be 1500 or more years old. The shells are two different species, one I think is what is called an "Unio" shell and the other is unknown. The are probably brought from the Ohio River which is 2,000 feet down the road. The prehistoric Indians in my area ate the heck out of these clams. Well i put my detector down and investigated the area with no avail. No luck detecting either, just way too much iron in the ground.
