White's DFX
well, i knew there was a ring somewhere in that field. at a family reunion near that old foundation site, one of my husbands relatives told me about a cousin (once removed) losing her ring there a good many years back. we even looked for it that day with my dad's Classic ID that i was fond of using. to no avail. so i've had that in the back of my mind these post 2 1/2 years or so i've been hunting there, but have never come up with a ring. last evening i was there again with the DFX, not even thinking about the ring, actually hoping to find more silver :D. the funny thing about this find is that just before i unearthed it, my 18 year old brought my 8 year old by and said he had to leave (he had been hunting at our nearby family cabin) but that my little guy was excited to hunt with me. benjamin jumped out of the car and ran over and i said, "oh, honey, there aren't good treasures here like in west virginia." i took a few swings then said, "hey, i'll take these headphones off; i know you like to hear the beeps." i bet it wasn't five minutes til i had this good, solid signal that we both heard. he ran over and said, "can i find it?" i told him that i didn't think it was anything good, probably a shotgun cap or something (it read between 28-30). he couldn't get the shovel in the ground so i told him i'd dig out a plug and he could use the bulls-eye. he liked that idea. after i dug the plug, about 3 inches worth, i scanned the hole- still there. "OK, it's right about in there, i said." while watching him poke around i saw a rim of gold and said, look, i see it!" he pulled it out after i showed him where and i said "IT"S A GOLD RING!" i don't know who was more excited out of the two of us. i told him that i thought it belonged to one of daddy's relatives, and to be honest, he was a little disappointed, but i asked him to think how he'd feel if he lost the thing that symbolized the covenant of marriage to someone he loved. that may have helped a little ! when it got dark we headed up tp the cabin where my husband and his brother were back from hunting. they were shocked when i told him that i'd found the wedding band. my brother-in-law called his dad right away for the phone number of the cousin (he knew who it was, i hadn't remembered her name). i called her right away, told her who i was and said "i was using my metal detector at the mountain tonight and i think i found your wedding band."" her response was "OH, you've got to be kidding me!" "No, i found a 14karat yellow gold band here," i said. she told me the location where she had lost it and i said, "yesw, that's right where i found it. she said,"there used to be a tomato patch there, that's where i lost it. Praise the Lord, i lost that ring 50 years ago!" i told her that she would be surprised what good shape it is in- that it looks brand new (it really does!) and she said, "well, i didn't have it very long before i lost it! " she told me several times how thankful she was that i would return it and i told her how excited i was to be able to do so! and i meant it!! we agreed to connect with each other to return the ring as soon as we can (she only lives about 25 minutes away). i'll try and post pictures of the return. oh, i also found this button just before i quit for the night. i think its pretty neat looking, but it was kindof anticlimactic after the ring find! as always, thanks for looking!

It is nice to be able to reunite a ring with it's rightful owner. I've done it before with a 1928 class ring and it was one of the highlights of my hobby. :icon_sunny:

thanks everyone for your shared enthusiasm- and thanks, XLT, i didn't know what GAR was (i'm ashamed to say :-[), being relatively new to this hobby, but i looked it up and i am thrilled!! i just called benjamin down to show him what a GAR button was- i had no idea it was something with such significance. the original land-owner who was my husband's great-great-great (don't know how many greats) grandfather was deeded the tract of land this was found on for his service in the Civil War! wow! thanks again for your reply!
