I was given a tin full of points and stuff and this one was in the bottom. My Uncle said he got them from the desert out west. Any idea on this one? It's my favorite even though it's missing a bit. It's also very thin.

I could be a jerk and tell you it's nothing and you should send it to me because it's worthless, but I can't do that. What you have there if it's a legitimate real point is one of the rarest point types found. That my man is a Folsom Point and a very nice one at that. Even with the ear broken off that thing is very very valuable. Don't let anybody talk you out of that one. Of course, if you don't want it I'd surely take it off your hands. LOL

It does look like one but I don't want to get my hopes up. Are there forgeries? I guess there are. This was in a cookie tin on a shelf along with a bunch of other points and stuff. Tiny little guys that I'll post tomorrow. I liked this one because it's thin and even. 90% of the points I find are crude and chunky.

I have to play Devils Advocate and presume it's not real. Pretty though.

GL, you have to be the first person I've seen on here that says its not the real deal. Too funny, I like it though, LOL.
Nice rare point there.

Molly.

GL, from your picture it looks good to me, but it's hard top tell from just a picture. Is it fluted on both sides? Is it ground along the base sides on both sides? It could be a good point and you are just a very lucky man to have ended up with it.

Looks good from what I can see from the pic- but you're right for being cautious as the early paleo types are frequently reproduced. This one would be worth the money to have an aunthenticator take a look at it.

I went through that cookie tin and I'll post the photos of the stuff inside. There was a plastic holder marked Folsom in the tin with it but this one wasn't in it. A tiny arrowhead was in the holder.
Honestly the points and things look too finely made to be real. Like I said, what I'm used to are mostly crude points made of what I now know is Rhyolite and chert from Morrow Mountain. Two words I didn't know before signing up for this site. I really like it when the tiny ones have the cut outs for tying to a shaft and it's seems unlikely that such things would last in the soil for long.
I don't know anything about this stuff. I didn't find these personally so I don't know their history other than they came from "out west" "years ago". I rarely talk to the guy I got them from. It might be 6 months or more before I see or hear from him again but he did tell me he found the one in this thread in the desert.
Thanks for the information, I was up till midnight reading about the Folsom Point and the bison skeleton and about Clovis(which I had heard of before). If this is a real point then I feel bad keeping it seeing as it's a rare thing. It should be somewhere where it can be seen.

EDIT: Yes it's fluted on both sides.

I,ll give ya 40 bucks for it! lol It sure looks like the real thing from the pic.Wow,fluted both sides!! I believe I,d hold on to that.Just like hittin the lottery someone has to be lucky. There are plenty of us that would love to be so lucky. And what a nice present too.

Jeff

Hey, if you don't want to keep it and want it to be seen I'll be sure to display it out where everyone can see it. My collection is on display for everyone to see and I'd make sure that was a focal point of the collection. Just a thought.

I'm going to hold on to this one. I liked it a lot before I knew what it was and still think it's a fine thing to own just for it's appearance.
I'm wrapping this up and placing it in the safe. I actually let my boy hold it! He's 3! :o

Now I need to know about the others.

I'm willin to bet thats a real one man. While there are forgeries out there, most fakers tend to make whole ones. There are other things about that point that are oft as not overlooked by the artifakers, like the remains of the fluting platform at the very bottem of the flute to name one.
Thats one super nice point you have there!!

That is most definetly 'A Keeper'.

Awesome point!
It sure looks to be a good one in the photo. Send that bad boy off to be authenticated by one of the reputable authenticators. Lets see those other points too!

Happy Huntin' , Bent-Twig.

Just saw the post on the other points. I sure think you got a good batch of points. That folsom would be the highlight of anyones collection!

Nice box find ,imagine all the artifacts laying in old barns, attics etc...

I totally posted this in the Best Finds area.

I talked to the guy who found it today. He said he picked it up on the Mesa somewhere near Albuquerque in the early 70s while on leave from Kirtland AFB. He said he actually bent over and picked it up.
Love it. It's in my safe now with my great grandfathers shotgun.

Best place for it, Hopefully your son will grow up to be a rock hunter, be a nice start for his collection. ;D

Molly.
