Yesterday I hunted a few sidewalk corner tearups, but didn't find anything....except for a strong quarter signal I got in the grass right *near* the sidewalk tearup that I just had to dig. It turned out to be a 1988 quarter--with a 1956 wheatie sandwiched to it's side. (no pic) Obviously someone in 1956 was counterfitting 1988 quarters.

Tonight I had about an hour to hunt, so I wandered around aimlessly for awhile, then found a weird spot that I just had to try. I hunted it for about a half hour, maybe 45 minutes.

I'm curious if anyone can guess where I might have found these or at least what kind of spot I was hunting?

The keepers were a 1950-S wheat, a 1919-S wheat, and some square nails. They were in the downtown Portland area, on public property. They were NOT in a park, or in a sidewalk strip. They were NOT in a construction site, yet the square nails were on the surface, and the 1919 wheat was less than a half inch deep. The 1950 wheat was about an inch deep. I'm sure there is probably more there. There was a ton of junk that I did not show you.

Any guesses? heheh

I love hunting the weird spots no one else thinks of hunting.

bummer on the no finds in the sidewalk tearup. But at least you dug these couple things.
My guess... in the median between the road??

good luck

Well, I'm not too good at puzzles but my guess would be a Bus Stop. But maybe this qualifies as a "sidewalk strip".

Other than that weirdness escapes me. :)

Mirage

prolly an old house once there or a newspaper stand...

Hee Heeeee! Some great guesses here!

OK, not a vacant lot, there was never anything built there.

Not a bus stop or planter box.

Not a backhoe bucket (ROFL!)

Not a median strip, although that is a great guess. I've hunted those and found goodies before.

Any more guesses? I'm so used to hunting weird spots, I can still think of about 5 you guys haven't guessed!

I'm going back out there today, I'll get a pic.

Cool...we give up...where?

In front of a XXX movie cinema?

Sorry I'll be serious.

empty lot that held carnival's?

im gonna go with the beach. lol :D

;D

Nope, not a vacant lot.

Beach = good guess, since there are 'beachy' areas in downtown Portland, but......no.

Hint: I have found coins in between the cobblestones of old streets. (that isn't where I got these)

I'll be hunting this afternoon, I'll be sure to take the camera and show you.

Any more guesses in the meantime?

Dear Weirdness,

Here are my guesses:

Around the trees planted along the sidewalks? ???

International Rose Test Garden? ???

River bank at Waterfront Park? ???

Down in the sewers? ;D

i laughed hard at that one.

OK, I just have to make a guess.

I am not sure if this counts as weird but my guess is along the railroad tracks.

Super great guesses everyone!

I see Lisa even did some homework....

But vwayne is the closest--since this is where I was hunting:

Believe it or not, this actual city street is right by downtown Portland, just a few blocks from skyscrapers. I had to laugh when I saw they even put up 2-hour parking signs. LOL!

Here is my apprentice THer hard at work:

The ground was so hard and rocky we had to leave a few good-sounding signals until fall, or the next available monsoon. We didn't pull out any more coins, but we did find a cool old brass bell. It used to be round instead of smooshed, but it was still a cool find:

I hope everyone had fun guessing, and thanks for all the great comments!
