Well I don't know? Suspender or medal hanger?

So tell me what is it? It is made of aluminum or very thin non magnetic steel. I am leaning towards suspender clip or Medal hanger. It was found at a house that was deeded to 1894. But I think it was a rebuild due to the shoe buckle and 1800 draped bust large cent I found there also.Thank you for your ideas. P.S it has patented apr 23 86 stamped into the back.

suspender adjustment buckle. the toothed part is missing, but you can see where the teeth wore the nickel plating
