Well it’s been 3 long years of not being able to get out and detect but I still got it done

After 3 years of not being able to get out and detect do to a broken back, which included 4 surgeries and I’ll have to have another one later, and a knee replacement surgery in 2018 I finally got out with my new AT Max and dug some deep Civil War bullets, primer box, and some brass pieces that look military related. I haven’t had time to clean them up yet and get them in order to post but I’ll make sure and do it tomorrow. Hard to walk with even 10 pounds on my back and swing a detector but I got it done, but next time I’ll be sure to have my brother there because 100 acres is too much for one person to try and remotely concentrate on. We usually wonder around till one hits a hot spot and then we both converge on the area. It was a known camp and meeting place for both sides of the war, but after wearing my U.S. Army long sleeve shirt, and vest, I’m beginning to worry I may have not had the greatest of luck since it was primarily a confederate camp😂

Oh well, we’ll see what next weekend brings when he can finally go down there with me and we can both concentrate on it and try to make it work. We’ve been there before and found the camp. It was never hunted before us, and hasn’t been since we last went so we’ve still got a lot of ground to cover and I’ve got some more reading to do on the history of the site and the letters and maps of the area.

Still trying to get in the groove of what settings I want for out there. I was using Zero Program, about 18 disc, max sensitivity and ground balanced at 87. Bullets didn’t sound all that great like I would have thought but the brass and the other items sure weren’t missing a beat. The lead just seemed to be much quieter. Not sure if there’s something I’m not doing right or what. I’m a Minelab, Fisher, and Whites guy, my brother has always been a Garrett guy and last one he had was the AT Pro so maybe he can tell me what I’m doing wrong. Of course it didn’t help most were nearly 9” down due to years of plowing, and the ground has been fertilized before, and electric fences surrounded the place. Oh well, I’ll get y’all some pics up tomorrow after my audiology appt, and go from there. It’s good getting back, but I’m a bit sore from walking and carrying that weight since I haven’t done it in so long. Used to we could detect 12-14 hours and have no issues but hey that’s the joy of getting older.

But after 25 surgeries I still put the detecting up as some of the best rehab.programs there is.

I know the feeling. I've only been out one time since 2018. I know the pain & long recovery of your situation. Glad you finally got out to buzz again. I'm wishing you a complete recovery and many more happy hunting excursions. God bless. J.T.G.

It’s true on both our ends. We used to go all hours of the day, and living on a Union camp for almost 7 years we’d detect during the day or even into the dark and use our headlamps to detect. Not anymore, that’s way too much bending over and getting back up. I even bought a 31” Sampson T handle shovel to dig with because I used to have one and loved it, now I figured out I can’t use it because I have to bend over too much. So I guess I’ll be using that in those little yards or parks.

Yes, it’s been a long battle and still a lot to go. I’m feeling it today but the only solution to getting back out there and feeling a bit stronger is to keep after it. I know I have to pace myself and not carry as much weight as I’d like to in my bag, but as long as I’m not far from my truck I feel I’ll be alright

Yes all the surgeries I’ve had plus the two strokes and one minor heart attack I am pacing myself and know my limitations. I know that it’s going to be a long time if ever that I can get back out there and really go after it. I know I can’t do it alone so that’s why I’m hoping my twin brother can hurry up and start going with me again. Between all the surgery and recoveries/dr appts I’ve had time to research all the history of where they camped, and where the property is in reference to where they were and believe we’re right on top of it I just need my brother there so we can really concentrate on some of them spots. There was a lot of troops, so somewhere in that area there’s got to be a lot of lost stuff.

The pack, carry then drop it on the ground. Use it for a water/food rest spot.
Carrying it around takes energy.

That’s what I did yesterday. I just laid the pack down after taking my drinks with me. I’ve spent months upon months doing rehab, but the only real rehab is getting out and doing what we can. Trying to get out and detecting is the only way to get all those muscles moving again. I think I need to see the chiropractor after yesterday but there’s only so much you can do for someone who’s got 4 spinal fusions, 8 inches of titanium hardware, and 12 screws back there😂

I’ve got pieces of bone fragments that are so close to my spinal cord they can’t remove them so I have to be real careful, also one screw in a fusion has came loose and they will have to take it out on next surgery. The next surgery is going to be adding more hardware and fusions to stabilize the area to semi prolong the issues so that I can live somewhat a normal life. The arthritis and a fake vertebrae has made it real awkward when laying down or twisting wrong. It’s strange to hear medical hardware pop

Ahh, betting older and carrying injuries. Takes a bit of adjusting. I'll not pretend I know yours, but it does take one back a bit doesn't it. It did me.
When I sold my big gear a few months ago it was like loosing a good friend!
I downscaled hugely. But, I really appreciate getting out like I can.
My hrs are down big time, my areas terrain are down big time, my detector my friends call a toy (they are great friends and just joke and still invite me out) my misses calls my detector a Dingus Machine, gotta love her 😒. Nah, she's great. Really.
Good luck anything you do! Im fortunate to know some very relatively easy places from living here in the areas I go to have a go with an ultra light for a few hours.
