I went out yesterday afternoon to a spot that I’ve found a lot of coins at. I was working a trashy area when I got a very faint 98 on the XP Deus. I removed a couple of inches of soil and the target sounded even better. I dig, and discover this old girl.

You can just make out the Liberty Cap, and if you hold the coin at the perfect angle you can see the 7. This coin was deeper than my pinpointer is long. I measured my pinpointer last night and it’s 9.25 inches! Any 1700’s US coin is fun to find, regardless of condition!

Shes a nice one Im still looking for my first stay safe out there

I agree wholeheartedly secondstar. Any coin or relic from the 1700's in any condition is worth a celebration. Leave it to the Deus to sniff out that coin at such depth! Well done!

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Very very nice! I was just saying that I want to find one of those badly!

Great find neighbor!

Great find Secondstar! Liberty Caps do not come easy. That came in as a 98 on the Deus? I have to ask what frequency were you using and did you have Normalization Off or On? I've never had a copper read that high. But a coin that deep is on the edge of detection and could show up in the iron wrap around range. Did it give you a diggable tone? Glad you dug it!

Congrats on a rare find !

Great question Jeff H! My new favorite technique for coin shooting is to run in 25 kHz (X35 coil) with ID norm set to off. This pushes most US coins into the 90's which as a coin shooter is desirable. A wheat penny for example, rings up as a 93. I can hear the roundness of the target, and I find that the Deus provides such fantastic audio information that I can hear the relative thickness of a coin versus junk high conductors. Of importance, I drop audio response down to 3 as I believe that audio response of 4 or higher is too loud and "flat" sounding for coin shooting.

Here's my coin program if you are interested, start with Deus Fast;

Decrease Audio Response to 3
Increase Disc to 7.5
4 Tones:
120
400 7.5 - 75
800 76 - 92
993 93 - 99
Sensitivity 94

I dig all coin sounding targets, I'm completely unconcerned with being able to differentiate between a clad quarter and a silver quarter, I dig them all.

Nice find mike, that one is still on my list!! Stay safe

That's a good program Secondstar. I run a very similar one when I get into the iron. My ears like the tones just a bit lower though. But I like to run my audio response at 3 also. A lot of folks like to crank it up but I like that extra bit of audio info on the signal strength that 3 gives compared to 4.

Mr. Dirt, yeah those Liberty Caps are hard to find here in MA. Hard to find in New England in general. The detectorists in New Jersey say they are not too uncommon there though. To put it in perspective, a buddy of mine has been detecting 20 plus years, has over 200 coppers and just found his first Liberty Cap last year.

I know that Gary from the UK is also a huge proponent of audio response 3. For my ears, audio response 4 makes the machine too loud and very flat sounding. I also do not believe that I'm missing any faint "squeakers," this coin at 10 inches is proof of that.

Way to go Mike, you've been having a good coin year. At this rate you should be able to knock off a few bucketlisters before the season's over!

Great find! That is my favorite old copper to find! :occasion14:

I look forward to the day when you, ACOJoe, John, and I can all pile into one truck again and head out to one of our far out spots for the day. These times however, are forcing us to stay local, revisit old sites, and slow down. We’re all having a good season!
