Carl called me up this morning and asked if I wanted to go try to find some of the old schools, churches, etc. in the area that are shown on our old 1887 maps of the county. We found a few potential sites to go check in the future.
We found one old school shown on the map that is within a few feet of a cemetary dated 1840 on the front gate. We found the owners of the school and got permission to hunt the yard. Sadly, 90% of it is a gravel driveway. But I did manage ONE coin out of the small area we did have to hunt. A nice 1900 Indian Head penny that isn't green. It was about 3" deep in HARD clay dirt. They said it had been hunted hard over the years and with the ground being as hard as it is coins could not have sunk more than a few inches deep. The best looking part of the school was the back yard and there was a mean dog in there. We were given permission to go in the fenced in area, but the dog kept trying to bite us whenever we got near.
We then hunted a yard of a house that his friend owns and I got two wheats: 1923 and 1939.
I haven't tried to clean any of them. That's how all 3 of them came out of the ground.
The wind was making it toooooo cold to continue today!
Hope everyone else did better than we did!
