I was on a buddies property today, he owns a large plot in the only mountainy area around here. I came upon this, it's definately man made. there has never been any farmland here so that rules out a spring. anyway. there are two entrances one on either side of the ridge, they are about 35 yards apart directly accross from each other and it is down about 15 feet in the ground at the deepest point. one opening is 6"x12" and has a large flat rock that is square shaped laying next to the hole, the other entrance is about 2'x 1 1/2'. it is all stone lined, all creek rock, the creek is about 300 or so yards behind this. I also got two shots of the inside of the tunnel, not good but good enough, it is pitch black in there. i'm glad I finally bought a digital camera. what do you guys think it is? I was thinking something along the lines of a civil or revolutionary war bunker or stash site, your opinions are helpful.

similar one, Ill email you if I ever find the others I have found. Check the map and see if that area is in the heart of the underground railroad.

It is in the vicinity, I actually know where there is part of the underground railroad that I have been wanting to detect, it has large tunnels big enough to walk through and an underground room but i haven't had the time to get back there to cover it real good. I tried once but it is a really trashy area, the house and property was inhabited up until the mid 1980's

wow! that is impressive - the history there.... very cool over the coal history in my area... :icon_thumright:

Scavenger.

I think it is obvious that you will have to take a few weeks vacation from your work, pitch a tent, and start digging. We cannot wait for you to get in there and tell us what you find.......Well?.......Is that tent going up yet???

Sent ya an PM. The cool thing is there might be engraving/artwork/ or names with dates in the rocks. people get bored...

I Agree, be very careful. Most of these have caved in over the years. Now are being found, and people think they are old cellars, when in fact they were caves. a lot of the loose rock from the center, would have been re-purposed. Giving the hunter to get closer to the heart/center of the sitting area. Making them think it was a cellar. Anyhow be safe...

This could be a air shaft for like a a iron ore mine. When I was a kid here in Pennsylvania my cousins and I went to one of these vents.I had a rope around my waist and went down in.Seemed like a good idea at the time but thinking back it was a bit foolish as when I got back in a ways it was caved in.But definately like every one says use caution, but hope you get something good. weemskat
