Detector(s) used
Minelab Explorer II
I'm new to beach detecting and I'm having a few problems. Wondering if you guys can help me out. I had heard that it was best to detect in/near the surf line but this problem is hurting my chances of finds. Am I too close to the water? How far away do you guys hunt from the surf? Any tips in this area would be greatly appreciated.

I walk right into the surf, if your not getting the coil wet then your not close enough

This line moves in and out with the tides Sarge. How is this a problem by hurting your chances. True that much stuff is also lost in the dry sand too. If someone drops something on the dry sand and they know it, it is easy to pick up. In the water where they play it is usually gone till a guy with a detector finds it. Also slippery fingers lose more rings than dry ones.

check low tide times, start mding 2hours before lowest time
and follow the tide out.

HH dave.

I like to start 3 hours before low tide and do as the others here said working my way out into the surf. At night I want get as deep in the surf as during the day, as things that go bump in the night here have big teeth. During the day I will get up to chest deep, but at night knee high is usually as deep as I will get in the surf.

Don't want to be a Hors D'oeuvre

Thx for all these tips. Do you guys also detect in the sand where the water was a few hours earlier? In general, how deep are you prepared to dig in the sand to get a find?

Will the detector (Explorer II) be okay if the coil gets submersed in salt water? I've not wanted to take the risk of frying it. Also, Is it worth detecting on abandoned beaches?

Thanks for all your responses. I love getting out there but I want to be more effective.
Cheers,

Sarge

Yes you can get the coil wet with the Explorer II, however don't raise the coil higher than the controls or water in the shaft will fry the guts in the box. Always keep the coil lower. Just be careful that you don't get a wave knock you off your feet or sweep the detector outta your hand.

Abandoned beaches, of course. Maybe someone has hunted there and maybe not. Since they might not have been using a newer minelab with that DD coil, it's a certainty that they didn't get it all. How deep should you dig? As deep as it takes. I have left targets buried very deep when I used a PI, but never a Minelab with the Iron mask.

Good Luck,
Sandman
