What are those "oval" rings on the old topo maps?

Yes, in my experience those are horse tracks or fairgrounds.

Horse racing track! The only other other thing that I have heard them called is a "driving park", I looked for one and found it's location is now a 4 lane intersection. I guess I am about 60 years too late.

So there should be some good stuff there for digging up huh? Would there have been things like stores being sold or gatherings of people?

That would be awsome if they are old fairgrounds!

How old is your map? Could be a track (for field & track sports), but anyway you can be sure there was plenty of activity there!

Jeff, that's cool. But where do I find old aerials views from? All I get are the recent ones online.

I can view the 1875 and 1898 topo's online and no doubt they offer a ton of info and places to go. Eventually I'll purchase some maps of my area but at some point I had seen some 1953 topo's but can no longer find them.
