Found on an old Plantation site. Working the middle of the field in an area where the slave quarters would have been (so we're told). Found lots of square nails in the area, so I know we are close to a structure site. I know what I think it is, but ill let you all give me your thoughts.

Thanks,
Jmann

J.. Is that neck, waist or ankle size in diameter?

Kace

I would say neck. Its about 10 to 12" in diameter

I doubt it is chain slave collar, it seems too big and that toggle isn't exactly secure. Maybe a Mastiff or farm animal collar? Maybe a log chain?

The main bit of evidence is the fragment of lighter gauge rusted-out braided steel cable attached to the toggle; I'm pretty sure such material wasn't widely available in the 1850s or before. What's the other chain you found?

I asked the size because I had found some hobbles that were ankle size and had leather between the chain and where they would lock around the ankle. There was a ring between each cuff...like another chain or rope could be hooked on that. I donated what I found to a black history museum.

I've found what looks similar to what you have... But mine wasn't complete like yours.

Is what I described what you are thinking you have, only neck size?

That's what I was thinking but Plumbata has a point. I would rather it be a tool for gripping a log or for a pet dog or something.

Absolutely! That's why I donated the set I found. I had them hanging on a wall at the cabin along with other old stuff I've found down there and it didn't matter what I was doing...my eyes kept gravitating to them and that wall has probably 75-100 different things on it...I wanted them gone and they were appreciated by the museum. Win-Win.

The other chain is a bit different and not complete. The links are longer than that of the other chain.
