Do not think it is a branch of the Armed Service.

It is the Great Seal Of The United States.

i think the army used that around ww1 to ww2 :) shermans right, i think its generic for the armed forces or something not one particular branch.

Yes, it is worn by members of the U.S. Army.

It is not the Insignia of the Department Of The Army, it is the Seal Of The United States which U.S. Army members wear.

still used it in late 60's and to be honest I think, I'm not sure, they are still using it today.

Yes it does, I neglected to add that as my wife is always bothering me to do something or another and I tend to post in a hurry. It says Scoville Mfg. Waterbury. Also it's black, the floresant light makes it look goldish.
