What causes discoloring of coins in ground even if not old

Oxidation colors can vary be soil contents and some soils quickly start galvanic corrosion. Damage also depends how acidic or alkaline the soil is. Zinc based coin fare the worst since they make excellent anodes. Salt and vinegar can clean them quickly...sometimes too quickly. For heavy corrosion a tumbler like worldtalker suggested is quick and easy. I use a vibratory tumbler from Harbor Freight.

I threw all my old coins in a machine at the bank, dirt and all! You should have seen the looks I got.
