Found this this morning right after I decided to give up on digging because the ground was too hard. It’s funny I’ve walked that spot after nearly every rain for years and there it was right on the surface.

That area produces a lot of early archaic stuff and a lot of it it about a foot down. The material is very high quality for the area and the flaking seems to fit. But it looks like it may have been heat treated and the overall shape seems like it could be younger. Also being on the surface makes me suspicious it’s as old.

I’m not sure if it’s a preform or a point with very weak shoulders. It doesn’t appear to be broken

I don’t know, but it’s a beauty! Looking in my Overstreet it’s similar to Covington, but these are “primarily found in central Texas.”

Nice flaking!

Nice find, really like the material.

Yeah been thumbing through overstreet and saw Covington too. Nothing that jumped out and grabbed me, I’m wondering if instead of a preform it’s actually been heavily resharpened

There is some crushing? On this one corner which if I’m not mistaken indicates use

Best I can come up with is, it was kinda Scott’s bluff ish with the flaking, maybe a packard based off the flaking description in overstreet + basal thinning and I think I have another packard base, munkers creek based on the weak shoulders, or maybe just a Gary type point. Don’t really like any of those ids though

Burroughs? Location is a bit off and it mentions random flaking, this one def isn’t random

This is an interesting piece.

A few observations and thoughts...

It seems too sturdy and well-made for a Preform. (To my eye)-It is clearly stemmed and has the look of a Spear type Lance. The flaking (collateral and transverse) is outstanding. I’m guessing it is re-sharpened. If so, this would eliminate the idea of it being a Preform.
My opinion is that it was originally much larger and over time and resharpening/reduction, the shoulders were reduced.
The very wide stem with the vertical thinning is trying to tell us something.
I believe it is of the late paleo/early Archaic periods. And though, it could be a variant of a regional point, I suspect that it may have traveled from a distant origin (farther north)
I like that point a lot.
Was there any conclusion on lithic material?

A guy who is big on material and sources thinks it’s “Burlington from the east side of spring river”

Thanks for the detailed look, that would fit with the site, the funny thing is every point seems to be a different style of early archaic point I haven’t found two similar ones yet
