Do you file a complaint with the post office? The box is insured up to $100. The buyer said it split open. It literally looks sliced down the side, not split.

$_122.webp

What was in there and is it damaged?

Junk. A junk jewelry auction; kiddie stuff. She hasn't written back. I offered to file a claim. The bag was tied shut. I don't think this was just mishandling. The bag looks like someone tried to see what was in there, IMHO.

The buyer needs to let you know if there is anything missing, if there is then yes file a claim (online, much quicker response)
https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htm It took approx. 7-10 days to get a check in the mail on the 2 USPS claims that I filed this year.

I don't know how she is supposed to know, given that she doesn't know what is in the box. :-(

I do tie the bag shut, to prevent stuff from falling out during travel. I want to know how the bag got untied ...

File a claim for what? If there is no loss or damage then there is nothing to claim.

Also, I have seen boxes split like that when stuffed full and then tossed around or crushed.

She = buyer?

This is confusing... Why WOULDNT the buyer know what is supposed to be in the box? They bid on the item, it should be listed in the description + pics, no?

I'd assume that she has some kind of "random 20 lb bulk costume jewelry, broken, for parts" listing, those seem to be pretty popular and it would be hard to tell if one or two tiny things were missing. I've bought a junk drawer or two, and unless the item(s) I was specifically looking at were gone I probably couldn't say if anything was missing or not if the box had arrived looking like the one above.

Yeah, what Baltimore said. I used to dump the stuff onto a table, but I had such a hard time getting it BACK into the box without breaking anything, that I gave up doing that. The auction is basically just saying, I put kids crap in here, it weighs X amount of pounds, great for parts or dress up, blah blah blah.

I haven't heard back from her. I did send her another email last night asking what she wanted me to do.

Like I said above, the plastic grocery bag was tied shut. That appears to be pulled open at the side. I do use plenty of tape, but I do not tape across the whole top that would have prevented that.

Here are my thoughts ... I used the PO supplies. The box is supposed to hold up to 25 pounds. The box was not over stuff, just stuffed up to the top. The bag was tied. It had one piece of tape going across the two sides (vertically), but not over the side of the box. Two pieces on each end. One piece across the whole length of the top. One on each side of the top. One going around the top (where it split), the whole length of the box. I do that on both the top and the bottom. I've sent much heavier boxes that didn't open. The woman in the PO told me it was too heavy to toss, but that was the 19 pound box she was talking about. Oh well. Note to self ... two more pieces of tape across the top and down the sides.

Well. So she wrote back.

I cant tell if anything was lost due to all the misc pieces. It was split straight on the line. I can send pics but i dont know what to do

I asked her what she wants me to do. If nothing is lost or damaged, I can't file a claim, right? So what does she want? Me to refund her money? The woman got 11+ pounds of jewelry for $12. Geez.

IMO, I would risk bad feedback on this one. You fulfilled your end. Nothing you can do. Seriously, over $12, what is there to complain about. Not your fault. If you get bad feedback, you might be able to dispute it or just live with it.

That is where I am going with this. Basically, USPS said they screwed up. I sent her this, and I'm done. GRR. So not in the mood of this. If she was nice when she wrote, I would have just refunded her the purchase price. She started out nasty. You reap what you sow. --

I spoke with Greg at customer service from the USPS. I explained what happened. He asked if anything inside was damaged. If there is damage, he said you need to bring it to your post office so they can access the damage. He said that there was nothing wrong with my packaging, it was damaged during processing, and that USPS accepts full responsibility for the damage. He said that when I presented it that it was done according to their specifications. He also said that the mail carrier should have apologized for the condition of the box, and stated that this was the way they received it.
After you go through the items, if stuff is broken, then you need to contact your local post office.
Please keep me informed on what happened, because I am terribly upset that this happened to you.

All's well that ends well! She said that the plastic bag was still tied, and nothing was missing. Left me positive feedback and thanked me for staying in communication with her. Yay.
