What do you look for in a site??

Hi all,

When looking for a site that might contain bottles and other relics, what would one look for as far as clues are concerned? Is there usually broken pottery on the surface and things of that nature??

More recent dumps might have broken glass, etc, on the surface, but very old dumps would have very little showing on the ground.
The older places would have soil buildup, & leaves covering them.

piles or scattered old old cans. like food cans, mixed with shards. you wont find any bottles with them cause they have been picked up long ago. make a probe and you might find some where the cans are, right below your feet
