What do you say when asked "Find anything good?"

If you were out and found a giant gold and diamond ring then someone asked "Find anything good today?"

Do you play your cards close to your chest?
1. "Oh, not much. Just like the exercise"

2. Show them only the trash you found.

Be Honest
3. You "Yes, I found this amazing gold ring", them "THAT'S MINE GIVE IT TO ME NOW!". You proceed to be robbed.
4. You "Yes, I found this amazing gold ring". You return the next day to find 10,000,000 Treasure hunters at your favorite location, and a Discovery Channel show about Metal detecting

This situation has not happened to me yet because I have not found anything good.

Well, the reponse all depends on who is asking the question. I can usually tell if a person is a little shady or not. Me? I would keep my hands close to my chest and go with the "I didn't find much at all today but that doesn't mean that there's nothing here." response. I would STILL be a friendly and polite as possible however. If it's another detector, I may even open up a bit more and would offer to share ideas and techniques. Thats just me however.

Depends on if I found anything good that day.

if I Did, I usually say Yea & Pull it
out & Hand it to them to look at.

IF I didn't find anything, I say Nothing Realy special yet today,
But ....... I found -------- here Before or
whatever is Necessary to say to get the person
interested enough to Hopefully,
spit out some Leads or Invitations.

Handed a wheat I just dug to a 5 or 6 year old Girl
that was following me around a ball field
the one day, she Immediately
stuck it in her Pocket.

I said "nooooo That Miiiiiine"
she pulled it out & Handed it to me saying
"Just Kidding "
Only time I was ever Worried though

I was detection on a beach, got a hit right at the feet of a gal laying on a blanket. Scooped out a pop tab, and showed it to her, mumbled "that's about all I ever find," and went on. If asked I usually don't say too much. I keep trash in one pocket and good stuff in the other. I've been known to show a handful of bottle caps and pop tabs. One time my 10 year old grandson and I were out, and a guy was throwing coins out in front of us to find. We bunched our stuff up and left. I hate that.

Had some Young Kids watching me one Day.
all of a sudden they decided to walk where they thought I was
hedding & dig a hole with a stick & Place something in it.
I Immediately turned & Walked a different Direction, so they ran over & Tried again.
This went on for a few Minutes like this & They gave up.
I ended up filling all their Holes in later after they left.

Irritating but, I considered the source. Kids

I just say..."Nah Im here just to build arm strength" or The gas industry is huge now in Pa. so I tell em...."Im just looking for Marcellas gas"

I tell them A Bunch of Trash and show them my pouch as the good stuff is in my pocket. As for kids especially on the beach I tend to give them my clad pennies and it's led to a few places to hunts from gratefull parents.

When this lake was drained, I Used to set a gold Pan
on the hood of my Car in the Parking lot



Every Keeper I found ended up in it.

I'd be detecting & there would be 2 - 3 strangers
picking through the pan,
looking at the gold class rings & other gold & silver rings,
silver coins Etc. sometimes I'd even set a display
of as many as 50 + rings I pulled out in the weeks before
there, Just to rub it in

nothing ever Disappeard

Of course Silver was about $3.50 an OZ & Gold about $250

Thanks for all your comments. It seems like the consensus is to downplay your finds. which as a newbie seems to make sense. Since they don't see the hundreds if hours that return little reward. If they want to get in the hobby they will realize its not a "get rich quick" scheme.

I still believe the most important thing
is to be as Honest as you can
with those who ask Questions,
even if you have to lie to them.

(Just joking about the Lying Part,
seemed to fit well with that sentence)

If they trust you, they are more likley to volunteer
info on leads or Property to search.

Of course you don't want to show that
Colonial Musket wrapped in oild Rags,
you just dug out the bottom
of a Fort Basement.
or Stacks of Gold & silver bars
in the cave you just exited

I had the folks throwing coins situation one time.When I reached the general area where they were thrown,I bent down,dug a few inches,slipped off my wedding band and held it up.As I was walking away I heard one of them exclaim"he found a ring!"Once while detcting a drained beach I was sweeping the waters edge when I saw a boater bearing down on me.I guess he thought he would soak me with his wake,but I knew this lake well and you could walk all the way across to an island when it was full.His boat hit the mud bottom at full throttle and literally stopped instantly when the prop buried itself in the mud.I finished detecting and he was still there when I drove off.

That's funny, I bet he was p.o'd. I've had a couple of people ask me if I ever find anything with my "giger counter." I'll smile and say "nope," but with my new high dollar sound proof head phones, people got to really talk up for me to hear them, so they probably think I'm rude a son of a gun.
