Every once in a while I take a chance on a bag of jewlery at the local thrift store

Most is costume jewlery but I have pulled gold and silver from the bags before

I was thinking these frosted hoops were silver but no markings visible anywhere so now thinking white gold. They pass the skin test by leaving a black mark on my skin. Scratching the hoop with a knife reveals the same color underneath so not plated. Also really heavy at around 17 grams for the pair.
Also the big reason thinking gold and not silver or costume jewlery is the ring up as 48-51 on my eurotek pro

So place your bets and make your guess. I don't have a test kit so I'm gonna stop sometime today and have them checked at a jewler

Not likely precious metal. The post is a compression hinge. Precious metal would likely have a pin through it.
???
Good Luck and HH

Didn't think of that. What do you make of it makibg a black mark on my skin when I rub it? I have tried that with many pieces of jewlery and only gold or sterling made a mark

According to how much oil is in your skin or what lotion or other chemical is present. I've never tried that as a test.
I've had customers bring gold or silver items back, complaining of them turning their skin dark and wanting a refund,
thinking that I had sold them junk. LOL

Did you check the wire post that goes through the ear? Sometimes the karat rating is stamped on it, hard to read.

Why not invest in an acid test kit if you buy entire bags from time to time

I can rub my 14K wedding band on my skin until it's raw and it only makes a red mark. What would cause gold to turn your skin black?

Not sure why. I think it's an old wives tale that it happens if you are low on iron

The top mark is from my wedding band. And lower mark is from the hoop

my wife has both gold and silver earrings like that, with the same hinge. although her posts look heavier and they are marked on the post. Hope they turn out to be real for ya !!!

Tested negative for any precious metal. Oh well maybe next time

Kinda figured

That is not true. I have a pair of 18 kt gold earrings, thicker than this, that have this type of closure. And they were $$$$

Ive found gold earrings with that type of latch.

Not the latch. The hinge.
The post is just held in by pressing the tabs together. Precious metal is too soft to hold this way, plus it wears quickly. I have seen sterling made this way a few times but have never seen gold. Normally that type of hinge is hypo-allergenic metal.
Precious metal normally has holes drilled in the tabs with a pin through them.

The small $10 sterling earrings I wear have the post
