What do you wear to protect your feet when surf detecting?

Recently I was at the beach detecting in a rough surf and my water walkers filled with sand. I've rinsed them out three times and they still have sand in them. I don't like sandals and do not want to step on any recently uncovered nails or a piece of aluminum. So what is everyone else wearing Sandles, water walkers dive booties or your bare feet ! what works and what does not? Thanks for your time R/Mike
