Pretty interesting find

What's even MORE interesting is that it was found in Hawaii. Since James Cook was killed there I wonder...Could it be from a Brown Bess?

wow what an amazing find, still looking for one of those, closest I got was a precussion cap hammer. :)

Maka, that is not a Brown Bess lock. Not an American military lock either. It might be a privately purchased English,American,or German lock.
If I found a lock like that I would try to remove some of the rust with oil soaking and a light brushing,by hand with a wire brush. Just enough to see if any maker's mark shows up. A flashlight shining across the face of the lock at a low angle might reveal a mark that could tell its history.

The first thing to pop into my mind was that it was a hammer off of a flintlock musket. I could be wrong though. It is very interesting that it was found in Hawaii. Please share more of how you found it with us. I would definitely rehunt the area where you found it. There may be more.
