That would have been a damn big silo. Looks more like an abandonded resort with multiple buildings or a huge house with some kind of decorative water feature. In any case--looks very promising.
The bottom one. I would say there was definitely building there, but what type is hard to say.

I agree with Jeff... an estate or something... I dunno.

My first thoughts on the first picture was that it was a sewage area, ponds, a tank... I am a native upstater, 19 years outside Rochester, 13 years in Rome/Utica area... relatives all over the place

I'm in Montana now, if your willing to divulge anything privately I'm willing to help with research. Just an offer that, if your like me, you will not take! ;) But would love to help...

God luck in your research! I always thought that was half the fun.

Why, because these look like the places people lived or gathered. I see lots of other spots, but that's where I would start.

Not far from my house are two round barns - about 100ft diameter. I think they date from the 1880s. You don't mention the scale so it could be 25 to 250 ft in diameter?? Looks like it has internal framing, So I am guessing a barn that at one time had a wood floor with a pit below.

Farmers liked them because the travelling salesmen could never corner their daughters in a round barn.

If it was on a RR spur I'd say it was an old roundhouse for turning engines.

This is a tough request... no measurement values, no possible era last used...

Common Rich! Throw us a bone... when was the area settled? How long since the structures were there?

Can you help at all without giving anything away?

Without an accurate scale for comparison, it's hard to determine the size of the features. But comparing the trees to the structure foundations, it appears these things were darn big!

Maybe a big cistern? Some big barns or bunkhouse type things. It's not easy to tell. I'd definitely want to detect and explore the entire area. Is the land accessible to you? You have permission to get in and detect? Look for a dump or trash pit, OK? Good luck.

LOL -Jim, and the others who replied-----
Wow for once i really got afew of you on this forum stumped!,....But heres abit of info ;)

I can tell you that these places are OLD!!!,one of the pics of the 2 "hedge boxs/square tree lines etc etc" is in one of the oldest area is 12 miles West from old "FORT ORANGE"--- im sure afew know about NY's rich fort history...
and to tell you guys the honest truth i have no freakin idea what the "Circle/silo lookin thing with the other structures" on the one pic,I found that one night looking for possible hunting places and BINGO!there it was so I used my handy chart "ILL ATTACH IT FOR OTHERS TO USE,VERY HANDY FOR FINDING HIDDEN STUFF AND USING SATT OTHRO"...

But a fast measurement for those strange large outbuildings "if they even are" was 130FT!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the other was afew feet off of "130",And i have never hit this spot yet!!!so i cant go into detail, but also what is strange about that pic/map is the Large size of the Buildings?,and also the "ROUNDHOUSE"theroy which "Charles P" posted is great, except for there being no railways built into this area, just a old road, and across the old road looks to be the remains of a LARGE old apple or corn field overgrown......

I would tell where this spot is but i cant guys,i need to explore it to see what he heck it is,and if i find anything good ill post pics, and when i think its time ill post what i know...

I am in the course of writing a Book which deals only for "Upstate NY" metal detectorists with leads to hunt "basic TH'er book/places to hunt and etc etc",but its gonna be MASSIVE,i have done a large amount of indie research so alot of info will be new than whats out there now.....im almost to the halfway point in finishing it,and will prob go to press soon after,,,,,

But besides the pics i posted ,what would you Upstate Hunters like to see or described in the book?....
Skirmish sites>?Buired loot,Ghost towns,Unknown or little known battle sites,Ghost towns and tons more are already done but Im making this book to be one of the best archival record source for fellow Upstaters.....
Well I hope i did not bore ya's that much but throw me suggestions, comments on the pics above or other things of interest.....
Rich "UPSTATE",Near the old fort in the Westonia.......ehehh
Use this attachment to help ya find them cellers and old roads!!!!!remember use THERMAL COLORS!! read the chart i found on a site somewhere....

Fort Stanwix... Rome, NY. If I'm not mistaken it's the first place the Stars and Stripes were flown in battle... worth a mention? Rome is also where the first shovel full of dirt was thrown to build "Clinton's Ditch"... the actual Erie Canal.

Upstate has a VERY rich history... I'd love to read the book when complete and hope you advertise it here when completed...

Well... I'm not real sure what you need from us... I think Ant gave you some great ideas about hunting the area without knowing what it was.

I know all about keeping my detecting spots close and not divulging locations... but this was kinda' a tease. :-\

12 Miles west of Fort Orange is right at 10 miles (ish) south of your location if I'm not mistaken... I hope you have a productive hunt there... let us know!

I don't live in your area and only visited upstate NY once in my life. Very pretty countryside when I was there in 1962. I imagine it has grown by leaps and bounds as the rest of the country has in the last 45 years. I hope some unspoiled areas still remain for you.

As far as a treasure or metal detector book of your area, make it complete. I'd like to buy a book of my own area that covers which machines work best in which situation. Where to find primary research materials (listed by general types like libraries and historical societies, and then specificially by the names and address of the libraries and historical societies.) I'd also like to see which places allow detecting and which don't and the rules and regulations in effect at the time of publication. I'd like to know where the local clubs are or how to get in touch with them, I'd like to know what basic gear is needed to get started and what gear might be helpful, but not necessarily needed. It would be great to know what to look for on maps and which types of maps are most helpful and how to overlay maps and why that is helpful. I'd like to buy a book that also includes which national organizations support our hobby and how we can help protect our hobby from those who would eliminate our activities on public and private lands alike. It would be nice to see the Code of Ethics printed out and emphasized as the best way to proceed. It would also be useful to know your own background up front so a reader would know if you are walking the walk. Show some photos of your own finds. Proper removal techniques with diagrams for illustration. And I'd like to see the author suggest that some of the historic finds might best be enjoyed if they are photographed by the finder and then donated to a local museum. And above all, I'd like to see an author promote the value and joy that can be obtained by a treasure hunter when finding things besides coins. Coinshooting is fine, I enjoy it myself. But in historic areas, there is much more excitement, IMO, when something is dug up that was used by a farmer, housewife, blacksmith, soldier, doctor, etc. Those things are pieces of American history that, for me, have just as much value as a silver coin.

I admire your desire to write a comprehensive book. That's a major undertaking and requires lots of personal resolve and dedication to complete. I'd consider about buying a copy even if I never visit upstate NY again. Good luck!

Treasure Tales - - Thx for the encouragement on the book,Now i know i have people interested which will make me put alot more effort in it,You also have some VERY GOOD suggestions!!,I am trying to make it more of a Relic Hunting hand book,Alot which you stated is already DONE!!!,and covers the first few chapters!!!along with the Pre-face and My background, aswell as a section about a person who really got me into "Huntin in the woods/Relic huntin",and findin them old coppers and celler holes, and made me learn the golden rule of "DIG EVERYTHING! USING -15 IM",thats the key to learin your detector aswell, not to mention "FILLIN THEM HOLES!!!" so noone knows you were there at all!....so a Shout Out To Bri!@!!!!EX-Upstater/////Thx man!!,you have made a hobby into a lifelong quest of hunting, not to mention that he was aswell cool enough to show me afew celler for me to start my adventuring!!!..

As for maps - this is a touchy area especialy when copyrighted materials are used, thats why im going to try to use PUBLIC OWNED materials that are pushed away in the historical archives of the US!...BUt i am going to have a chapter on todays technology of Satt and areial Imaging and what to look for....I want to add Beers pre-1866 Maps aswell but scarceness of material is really vauge, but ill have some good stuff .no worrys! I am trying to get rights to publish some Sanborn Material aswell, but thats gonna chip some from the pocket!..
BUt now i am having a problem deciding on if i should include some symbolology such as "ORO" or how to distingush a trial marker from a real Tres symbol....

As of now there is about 1 to 18 hundered sites aswell as Ghost towns and everything inbetween that, that are done, but i have to transcribe 2 notebooks of written info into what i have aswell/!...
So Again thx for the Thumbs up and the "what you want to see in a book" suggestions...

Well thats enough for ya to read, thank heavens for "Error checking/spelling "programs aswell...... ;D

Seems you may have given away too much info already.

Fort Orange is the name given to the fur trading post erected in 1624 on the west bank of the Hudson just south of the future site of Albany.

So your one site is 12 miles west of Albany. I'll see if I can find it on the sat map. ;D
