Welcome muddy. I have never seen one before, but, it is interesting to say the least. It appears to be a primitive bottle stopper. Also the groove above the bottom section reminds me of a wire groove in a telephone/electrical insulator. I would say a perfume stopper is a good guess. GL on it!!

Yo, Michelle, I don't see anything on that link that comes close to this item. In fact, I'm thinking this item wouldn't last long with such a thin neck.
Was it ceremonial?

Coup stick for counting coup seems reasonable. No real warfare involved, more a ritual to prove bravery and skill to gain power from an enemy without necessarily drawing blood. That makes sense to me because this item seems too "delicate" for actually breaking bones and skulls.

Looks like a recent fake to me,the worked areas do not match the rest of the stone.There appears to be no weathering on the worked surfaces.

Seems pretty small to me to be "anything" functional.
I can’t say what if anything, it would have been to be used as ceremonial either.
Although someone went through the trouble of carving it, but for what is the question…

Anyway, it doesn’t appear to me to be that old….something just isn’t right about it

It has some similarity to a full-groove axe, but I don't think it is. It could possibly be used as a sign of status if it's genuine. I think the chances are that it's not real. It doesn't quite have the right look. It's not a common or known style that I know of, so the "look" is not previously defined for this piece, but it looks more like a decent attempt at a fake. It also shows particular attention to detail/uniformity/workmanship in some areas, and little in others. Noone can tell for sure just by looking at the pics though. If it is guaranteed, or authenticated by a reputable house (like Tom Davis), then it's a safer bet. Just so you know...ceremonial, extra-large, and/or extra-perfect artifacts are fakes more often than not. Some are so well done that they require microscopic analysis to determine if they're real or not. Ebay artifacts are very risky unless authenticated.

I would agree with Gypsy--a full groove axe or maybe a coup stick head. It seems a little to perfect for anything to do with actual warfare since it is polished and very symetrical. A little less care would probably been used if were actually going to crack someones noggin or be something utilitarian and used everyday.

I found one in West (by God) Virginia about fifteen years ago, but it looked like the majority of the ones on the one link that was posted. Very crude, no sharp edge and very plain common stone.
