Don't know what it is but with the proper bracket it would make an excellent brush guard for the oil pan on an off road vehicle! Monty

Kind of resembles some type of engine block protector.

Your item maybe a saw blade jointer, used for leveling the teeth on a hand saw before filing it to sharpen it. Here's link that shows one, scroll down to "jointing."

http://www.vintagesaws.com/library/primer/sharp.html

It has a small file clamped in it that levels the saw teeth. I have a couple of them, but can't find them right now. The ones I have look more like the one you found than the one in the link.

Looks like it could be a resting plate for a hot tool, like an iron.

Now that's what I like to see. Ain't it great that we have a place like this to come and figure stuff out? Great job on the find and the research.

bigcypresshunter, I'm doing fair to middlin, and you?

I find it unusual that a tool would have no markings on it.

I am sometimes able to identify old items by looking in a reproduction of an early Sears and Roebuck catalogue.
