It appears to be some sort of a guard, or a metal lip guide thingy ??? ;D :D :D :D I swear I crack myself up. Of course thats just my opinion which is offered free of charge to all.

Too delicate for a buckle. Looks like something may have attached at the two small holes on the back. I'm leaning towards an ornamental overcoat button that may have had ribbon, silk or satin attached behind the copper "grill".

that is broken off of an old ash tray

Looks liike some gold gilt still on it. Probably some type of belt or dress clip. 1920's.

I think guard to a small light/bulb.

With the small holes in the back cross bar, I think it may have been attached to something else. Heat flange for a lantern knob?
