What is it?

I was out looking for a survey marker which I am certain is an iron pin. I did not yet locate the pin, I was sans MD. However, I did find this near where I think the pin should be. My first thought was old grave marker that somehow ended up there, but there is no date. Only the number 3 below the name Vandyke. It is clearly a man made stone/brick type item, but Ive never seen one before. Any ideas?
