Correction to an earlier post:
To me, this looks like high voltage, but low current - NOT high current.
High current devices would never have exposed terminals like that, and would require MUCH larger wires.
My guess is this is an electric fence on/off control switch, as mojjax has already suggested.
The year 1933 is really too late to be anything related to telegraphs or spark-gap transmitters, plus, the apparatus doesn't appear to have the required connections for a keyer.
Erze82 - be careful if you decide to power this thing up.
Think: Touching a 9-volt battery to your tounge, only (probably) a lot stronger!
