My detector picked this up on an 1860's property I am working. Soaked it in vinegar for a while and it looks like it could have been silver plated. I touched a corner with a file, and it appears to be brass. Thanks for any help.

Cool! We are seeing a rash of these sash buckle halves showing up here lately, and I love every one of them! Nice find!

Maybe a heater vent although brass has a lower melting point than iron. Maybe a front door viewing port. Lots of possibilities. Nice find.
