My son and I are trying to identify this item found in an old home over 100 years old.

Check for markings (maker or patent date) on the bottom...

I'd go with ink bottle. They were usually plain:

Thanks Yup sure does seem like an ink bottle! no markings I can see but it is rather worn

It is a cone inkwell

With that collar on it it looks like a Bixby bottle. They look very similar to a cone ink. Its either as glue or an ink. Got any pics of the base? Swiz
