What is this old picture?????

Does anyone know what is going on in this photo? There are pictures hanging on the house one is a portrait with a American flag below it. Along with others and a desk outside as well

It looks like a picture of the New School house with the towns families gathered for a group picture.

The caption on the wall is from an 1881 edition of McGuffy's Reading Charts (Lesson 4--scroll down here):

By the arrangement on the table I'd have to say that this is a memorial service. It either represents
a school or a Sunday school class. The old gent in the pic is the subject of the service. It does seem
to immortalize the achievements of the gent in the portrait but some of the onlookers are probably
his family and disciples. I don't know if this is McGuffey but it's a good call!

I don't know..., but last week, I think Creskol found the watch fob belonging to that man by the desk.

There seem to be a lot of leaves on the ground, so maybe that narrows down the time of year to mid-autumn?
So, probably not an Easter Sunday photo, for example.

Maybe a schoolhouse dedication?
Complete with the incoming class (students in the foreground)?

To me, it looks like a memorial service, probably for the gentleman in the picture. The flag below his picture indicates to me that he participated in some military service.

The picture could be the current President at the time. I remember a Picture of Lyndon Johnson hanging above the stage / Library / Cafeteria at my elementary.

Here is a picture of McGuffey, who died in Virginia in 1873.


The bell on the table leads me to believe that it is, as others have mentioned, a school house.

Also these pictures are on the outside of the building the would be ruined if left there. So had to be moved intentionally for photo.....along with the desk as well.....

I have a theory: jtw believes this may be an Ohio photo, and that fits with my theory that this is an Ohio schoolhouse, the local families and children, mourning or memorializing the death of one of Ohio's sons, President U.S. Grant. Born in Ohio, April 27, 1822, died July 23, 1885.

That's a portrait of Grant on the wall and the current flag of 1885 just below .
