Re: what is this piece of bone for?

Not sure but it's possible! I LIKE it!

Re: what is this piece of bone for?

very cool. My guess would be the end of a bow as well.

Re: what is this piece of bone for?

Very neat, the end of a bow would be my guess also. :hello2: :notworthy: :headbang: :hello:

Re: what is this piece of bone for?

It looks very much like the end of a bow, but think of how long a bow is compared to the length of most bones. Maybe it could be laminated with other materials or bone to add length, I don't know. Something to think about.

Re: what is this piece of bone for?

I have read they used pieces of rib bone to make bow's. What ever it is it look's like I can see some polish on it. Larson that side look's pretty smooth, is it as smooth as it look's

I agree. Your culture was pretty smart. Sure looks to be an end of a long bow. Nice one Larson. Have you ever found anything like that before??

Re: what is this piece of bone for?

yes flintdigger, it is real smooth, the back side is not
yes tn, i have found one more but it is shorter
yes shoreline it could be just the end piece of a wood bow
i think the bows were only about 36 inches at the longest but i could be wrong as i have only seen one
and who knows???, it could be an unfinished snow snake or ice glider????

Maybe, it is the other end of the same bow? Did you find it on the same site?

That would be an awesome find. I read that antlers or horns of animals such as elk, mountain sheep, and bison, along with bison ribs were used in the construction of bows, but it didn't mention how they were used or what parts of the bow they comprised.

Re: what is this piece of bone for?

Larson you said one side was smooth and the other side wasn't, maybe the side that isn't smooth was covered with something maybe sinew or rawhide. That other piece you found wouldn't happen to be the other end would it ?

Re: what is this piece of bone for?

if it could only talk
we might be surprised at what it was
i figured it would be worth keeping since i have found another one a number of years ago

Re: what is this piece of bone for?

Definitely worth keeping. It's hard to say just exactly what it may have been used for, but it was most certainly something.

here is the other similar piece i found a while back
any more opinions???

That look's like it could be a the end of a bow also, now all you need to do is find the middle section
