What is this? Pocket watch front plate??

This was dug near an old rock foundation. Its approximately the size of most mens pocketwatches, there is a place on the edge where it appears there may be a cutout for a hinge. There is a pretty intricate design on the face that looks kind of like celtic knotwork. It had a copper/green patina after cleaning but before coating it with briwax which covered up the patina. What do you guys think it is??
