Looks like an Abalone shell.
 

Sorry if I am answering your question too late. Yes, It is a shell and most likely an old one by the looks of it. So, there are two possibilites of how it ended up that far from the nearest ocean. #1 it was brought there by means of moving material from another location. #2 the fact that majority of Texas was once oceanic floor at once upon a time. if you keep searching you may find sharks teeth, eels teeth, fossils of sea life and or dinosour bones...I have found all of these 60 miles north of Dallas. The history of the planet is far beyond what you could ever imagine!!!!
 

Remember ,a long time ago,Texas was covered by ocean water.
