I found this at a Mexican American war site (1846-1848) and I have no idea what it is. Next to a penny for scale. Thank you in advance.

Is it steel/cast iron? Is it coated in rust or is that rotted wood? Looks like iron, IMO.

If so, might try hammering off as much of the rust as you can - get a better rendition of what it might be.

Thank you, I am pretty sure it is cast iron and I think it is dirt that is on it I will try to wash it off.
