Maybe an long odd broken skeleton key?

How much does it weigh?

1 ounce

I don't think it is a broken skeleton key. it doesn't appear to be broken and it has a small hole in the end of the rod. it weighs exactly one ounce. It has been cleaned but doesn't appear to have changed it much.

I am thinking along the lines of a canvas/tent/shoe repair tool. Meant to punch through heavy fabric or leather and pull a string back through. The looped part is round to push through, and then has the "cat's ears" to wrap your fingers back around to pull out. Just a hunch! Sub 8-)

Well, could possibly be.. it does fit my hand with first and second fingers comfortably reach around the ears as to use for pulling.. but what you are talking about is usually heavier built.. This shaft is only 1/4 inch around and 4 1/2 inches long and does have that small whole at the end.. I think with much force and that would break fairly easy.. Any more good idea's?

A "Marline" spike is a tool used by sailors to repair torn sails, like a giant sewing needle. (My Great X4 grandfather was a privateer, and was murdered by one of his crew who stabbed him with one in 1813!) Sub 8-)

It was found on an old farm in the middle of Tennessee.. The original house was built there in 1865 and tore down some time in the 1940's and another house built there in it's place.. Somewhere in that time frame a band of Gypsies parked their wagons near the house every year as they passed through the area.. It may have been something that the Gypsies used to sew their wagon covers..

Disclaimer: I'm just posting the correct solution that was posted by Ice Scratcher and ModelTguy elsewhere, so that no one spends unnecessary time in trying to solve it:
